IS MIKEL ARTETA SET TO BECOME A PREMIER LEAGUE BOSS THIS SUMMER?

It seems that Manchester City assistant coach Mikel Arteta could be at the centre of a battle between former clubs Everton and Arsenal, as according to the Daily Mirror both want the Spaniard to become their new boss this summer.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has come in for increased criticism this season and looks vulnerable to losing his job. Meanwhile, Everton boss Sam Allardyce looks unlikely to be at the club next season, as fan unrest grows on Merseyside. It seems that the Spaniard is on both clubs shortlists for any potential appointments this summer.

Developing into a promising coach under Guardiola

Mikel Arteta is currently an assistant coach at Manchester City working under Pep Guardiola. The Catalan boss sought out Arteta upon his appointment as City boss, so he obviously believed that Arteta had something about him when it comes to coaching.

Arteta completed some of his coaching badges before he quit playing. The 35-year-old is also reportedly highly regarded within coaching circles. His coaching experience is obviously helped by the fact that he is working under Guardiola.

The City boss has won everything in the game and has taken Arteta under his wing as his protégé. There are few better and more experienced bosses to learn from than the innovative Citizens boss.

Guardiola has his critics, who claim he only wins trophies because of money spent or he has inherited good teams. However, money is not always the key to success. The Catalan boss has still created teams that play sublime football.

Judging by his upbringing at Barcelona and the way Arteta played the game, I am sure he would like any team he managed to play an attractive style of football.

Both teams in poor positions

Appointing a first-time boss like Arteta would be a massive gamble for either club. Arsenal’s team is just not good enough and neither is sixth-place in the table for the team from north London.

They have been a soft touch under Wenger for the last decade. The Gunners may have won a few FA Cup’s in recent years, but the fans are unhappy that the team are no longer challenging for the Premier League top-four, let alone the title.

The Gunners squad needs a massive rebuild for the team to become successful again, which will not be an easy or quick job.

Circumstances are similar at Everton. The Merseyside club are in the best financial situation they have been since the days of the Toffees earned the nickname ‘The Merseyside millionaires’.

The Blues spent millions last summer in an effort to break into the top-six. However, the majority of the money has been wasted, with very few of the new signings proving successful.

The Toffees are currently tenth-place in the table, closer to the relegation zone than the top-six. The Merseyside club also needs a clear out of personnel, as a number of the players have proven they are not good enough.

Both jobs would be massive ones for Arteta. Whether as a first-time boss, he could go to either club and make the necessary changes is unknown. If the young boss failed at either club, it could have a devastating effect on any prospective prospects for the future.

Arteta seems an unlikely summer appointment at either club

Mikel Arteta looks to have a promising future as a boss. However, he must be enjoying working as Guardiola’s assistant boss. He is witnessing first-hand how the Catalan boss creates incredible teams. That experience could prove invaluable in the future.

The rookie coach has connections with both clubs from his playing days and holds affection for both. However, it seems far too early in his coaching apprenticeship to land such big jobs.

Arteta is currently 10/1 to be the next Arsenal boss, behind the likes of Joachim Low, Carlo Ancelotti and Brendan Rodgers. All three have major experience of managing teams at top levels. Low and Ancelotti have won the biggest trophies in football.

The City assistant is not even in the same league as a coach yet. Maybe in a couple more years, he could be ready to manage a high profile club. However, for now, it is probably best for the Spaniard that he stays on the City bench next to Guardiola soaking up everything he can.
