The founder of
the Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies at the University of
Ghana, Professor Chris Gordon, has reiterated that the spillage of the Akosombo
dam is a national emergency for which reason all hands are needed on deck to
support the over 12,000 persons displaced as a result of the inundation of
their homes.
The VRA
commenced the controlled water spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams on
September 15, 2023, due to a consistent rise in the inflow pattern and water
level of the Akosombo reservoir.
Thousands of
residents in South Tongu, North Tongu, Central Tongu, Asuogyaman, and several
other residents have had their homes submerged due to the spillage.
Speaking in an
interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Citi TV on
Monday, Prof Gordon noted that supporting these victims was critical especially
because they had lost everything and they were to start their lives from
scratch.
He also stressed
that the government could not be left to address the situation alone and go to
the aid of the victims for which reason everyone was needed on board to
support.
“They’ve lost
their connections, infrastructure, livelihoods…I think this is a national
emergency, far beyond the ability of government and macro to cope with so we
need to rally as a nation to support those people who have been displaced,” he
stated.
Meanwhile, Citi
FM/Citi TV, a prominent radio and television station in Accra, is embarking on
a crucial campaign to collect relief items for the victims affected by the
Akosombo Dam spillage.
According to the
Deputy Director of the Ghana Health Service in the Volta Region, Senanu
Dzokoto, at least 12,000 people have been displaced. Shockingly, at least 25
percent of the town of Mepe in the Volta Region now lies submerged beneath the
relentless waters.
Citi FM and Citi
TV are therefore calling on the public to contribute essential items, including
food, water, clothing, toiletries, mattresses, and blankets, to provide
much-needed support to those affected by this calamity.
How to donate
Citi FM has
established a dedicated collection point at its Adabraka office in Accra.
Additionally,
one can make monetary contributions via MoMo number: 0550900006 (Omni
Media), with the reference “Flood support.”
